# The problem

The internet runs on opinions about people, projects and ideas. None of them has a price.

*Figure: Two timelines. A prediction market trades until its resolution date, then closes for good. An R8 market keeps trading as news comes in.*

A prediction market needs an event, an end date and a judge. Most opinions have none of the three.

## Where opinions go today

- **Posts are free — and worth nothing.** Being early and right about someone pays nothing. A take is just a post.

- **Prediction markets need an ending.** “Will X happen by Friday?” can be listed. “Is X overrated?” never resolves, so it can’t.

- **Memecoins only go one way.** You can buy attention. You can’t bet against it and get paid when you’re right.

R8 gives any opinion **two sides**, a live price and no end date.
